Chess event set for Esports World Cup 2026 in Riyadh

Chess will feature prominently in the Esports World Cup 2026, returning to Riyadh after a successful debut last year. The tournament, headlined by Magnus Carlsen, runs from August 11 to 15 with a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification pathways and a multi-stage format have been announced by the Esports World Cup Foundation.

The Esports World Cup 2026, the third edition of the event, takes place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 6 to August 23. Within this broader festival featuring 24 esports titles and a total prize pool of $75 million, the chess competition is scheduled for August 11 to 15. This follows a strong inaugural chess event in 2025, where Magnus Carlsen, the world No. 1 and five-time world champion representing Team Liquid, claimed victory by defeating Alireza Firouzja of Team Falcons 2-0 in the final. En route, Carlsen beat India's Nihal Sarin of S8UL Esports in the quarter-finals. India's top player, Arjun Erigaisi of Gen.G Esports, reached the semi-finals but finished fourth after a 2.5-3.5 loss to Hikaru Nakamura of Team Falcons in the third-place match.

The Esports World Cup Foundation recently detailed the qualification process for the 2026 chess event. Four pathways exist: the 2025 winner (Carlsen) automatically qualifies, with three slots each from the Speed Chess Championship and Chess.com Global Championship. Six more spots come from the Champion Chess Tour leaderboard, and additional slots will be announced later.

The format includes three stages. The play-in stage pits eight players in two groups of four, using a GSL format with two games per match. The group stage advances to 16 players in two groups of eight, following a double-elimination bracket with two games per match; the top four from each group proceed. The playoffs feature eight players in a single-elimination bracket, starting with four games per match, increasing to six in the semi-finals, and culminating in a best-of-three final for the top two.
