India's Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of four High Court chief justices and senior advocate V Mohana as judges to the top court.
The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, made the recommendations during meetings on May 22 and May 27. The names include Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar of the Bombay High Court, Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Chief Justice Arun Palli of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Senior Advocate V Mohana, who was designated by the Supreme Court in April 2015, is also recommended. If accepted by the government, her elevation would increase the number of women judges on the bench to two, following Justice B V Nagarathna. She would be the second woman from the Bar recommended after Justice Indu Malhotra.
The Supreme Court currently has a working strength of 32 judges. In March, Chief Justice Kant had recommended raising the sanctioned strength from 34 to 38. The government approved this on May 5 through the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026.
