Developers at Sandfall Interactive expressed disappointment over PlayStation's plan to end physical disc production. Creative director Guillaume Broche described the move as a shame for the artistry of video games.
The comments came in an interview with Automaton following PlayStation's announcement earlier this month that it would stop making physical video game discs starting in 2028. Broche noted his personal attachment to game stores and tangible copies, adding that the decision makes sense business-wise but hurts the spirit of owning physical media.
Co-founder and CTO Tom Guillermin said the team considered skipping a physical edition of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to cut costs but chose to release one anyway. He explained that the studio valued giving players the option to hold the game in their hands, even though it meant less money per unit.
Lead character and concept artist Alan Reynaud echoed the sentiment, comparing physical games to physical books and describing the experience of buying a game in a store as a nice feeling that may not be possible again.
