Les développeurs de Sandfall Interactive ont exprimé leur déception concernant le projet de PlayStation d'arrêter la production de disques physiques. Le directeur créatif Guillaume Broche a qualifié cette décision de dommageable pour la dimension artistique du jeu vidéo.

Le cofondateur et directeur de la technologie Tom Guillermin a précisé que l'équipe avait envisagé de renoncer à une version physique de Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 pour réduire les coûts, mais a finalement choisi d'en proposer une tout de même. Il a expliqué que le studio tenait à offrir aux joueurs la possibilité de tenir le jeu entre leurs mains, même si cela signifiait une rentabilité moindre par unité. L'artiste conceptuel et concepteur de personnages principal, Alan Reynaud, a partagé cet avis, comparant les jeux physiques aux livres papier et décrivant l'expérience d'achat d'un jeu en magasin comme un sentiment agréable qui pourrait bientôt ne plus être possible.
