Hong Kong customs officers have arrested a 46-year-old woman suspected of trying to smuggle seven animals into the city. The animals, including a chinchilla and a sugar glider, were hidden in paper bags and valued at about HK$4,300. The case has been referred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further investigation.
Customs officers intercepted the woman at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line checkpoint on May 9.
A spokesman said on Sunday that officers seized the animals from paper bags she carried.
The seven animals were a chinchilla, a mouse, a hamster, three guinea pigs and a sugar glider.
“Customs reminds the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit is an offence,” the spokesman said.
The case has been referred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further investigation.
