Newly released details from federal crash reports reveal that remote operators were at the controls during at least two Tesla robotaxi incidents in Austin, Texas. The crashes occurred after the company began offering rides in June 2025.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data covers 17 incidents involving Tesla robotaxis between July 2025 and March 2026. In one July 2025 event, a remote operator took control after a safety monitor requested help, accelerated the vehicle and struck a metal fence. A second crash in January 2026 saw a remote driver hit a construction barricade at about 9 miles per hour. Both vehicles carried a safety monitor but no passengers at the time.
