George Russell secured pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix after a challenging qualifying session. He later clarified that a radio message from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was meant as encouragement rather than a command.
Russell took pole in Austria, beating both Ferrari drivers and teammate Kimi Antonelli. He started fifth in Q1, more than 0.3 seconds slower than Antonelli, and aborted his first Q2 attempt after a mistake at Turn 3.
Before his final Q2 run, Wolff told him over the radio: "George, just drive." Russell said the message reminded him of ongoing conversations aimed at rebuilding his confidence during a difficult season.
He described his Q3 lap as a "magic lap" that clicked perfectly despite a yellow flag at Turn 9 caused by Max Verstappen's crash. Russell lifted for 100 metres but still posted the fastest time.
Russell sits third in the championship, 50 points behind leader Antonelli after eight races. He has taken four poles this season, including earlier ones in Australia, Canada and Barcelona, but has converted only one into victory so far.
