Desalination plant in Cordova to boost MCWD supply amid El Niño

A desalination plant in Cordova town has started operations to provide additional water to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District as El Niño threatens supply.

The P2-billion plant run by Island Mactan Cordova Corporation aims to deliver 20 million liters of water daily to MCWD. It is currently in the testing phase with interconnections being coordinated.

Vivant Water president Jess Anthony Garcia said the facility is ready and the 25-year contract is in effect. CEO Arlo Sarmiento of Vivant Corporation noted the timing aligns with forecasts for a severe El Niño.

Pagasa has issued an alert for the phenomenon to develop between June and August and last until early 2027. Cebu City officials are also assessing other sources including deep wells.
