KRA outlines eight-step procedure for filing employment-only income tax returns

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has released an eight-step guide to assist salaried workers in filing their annual income tax returns via the iTax portal. This initiative aims to ensure accurate declaration of income and compliance with Kenya's tax regulations. KRA urges employees to follow these steps as the filing deadline approaches to avoid penalties.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has detailed an eight-step process to guide Kenyans who earn income solely from employment in filing their annual income tax returns. The tax agency shared this public guide, encouraging salaried employees to use the iTax portal for submission.

The first step requires taxpayers to log into the iTax platform using their KRA PIN or National ID along with their password. Once logged in, users should go to the Returns section and select the option labeled 'ITR for Employment Income Only'.

After choosing the correct return type, the system automatically fills in the return period on the e-return page, and the taxpayer must confirm it is accurate before clicking 'Next'.

In the fourth step, employees need to verify their gross employment income by going to section F. KRA advises taxpayers to check these figures against their P9 form, which employers provide.

The fifth step involves confirming the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax deducted from the employee's salary. Taxpayers are instructed to ensure the amount entered matches the deductions made over the year.

Next, employees should verify all deductions shown in the system under section T. These include statutory deductions such as pension contributions, the Affordable Housing Levy, the Social Health Insurance Fund, and personal relief if applicable.

Once income and deductions are confirmed, the taxpayer moves to the seventh step, which is reviewing the information and submitting the return. Users must double-check all details and click the Submit button to finalize the process.

Finally, after submission, the taxpayer receives an acknowledgement receipt confirming successful filing. This receipt can be downloaded right away or retrieved later via the registered email on the iTax system.

This simplified eight-step guide forms part of the authority's wider initiatives to simplify and improve access to the filing process for salaried workers nationwide. The update arrives as the deadline for annual income tax returns nears, with KRA calling on Kenyans to comply and steer clear of penalties.

It comes after KRA's recent announcement of a phased filing approach designed to make tax submission easier, quicker, and more tailored for millions of taxpayers.
