National Taxi Alliance cautions against intimidation of commuters

The National Taxi Alliance has reaffirmed commuters' right to choose their preferred transport without intimidation or coercion amid reports of bullying by some taxi operators.

The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) stated that passengers must remain free to use taxis, buses, trains, e-hailing services or other lawful options. It urged operators to improve service, safety and reliability instead of using force or threats. The NTA warned that members who interfere with passenger choice or other providers' operations will face disciplinary action. Spokesperson Theo Malele called on members, commuters, law enforcement and regulators to report incidents of forced patronage. Separately, the South African National Taxi Council in the North West said it will take disciplinary measures against patrollers shown in a viral video intimidating commuters in Hebron and Brits. The incident involves tensions with contracted bus operators and has prompted action from the provincial Transport Department.
