Region Skåne has again postponed the launch of the Millennium healthcare IT system following an internal review that identified major flaws. The current version is judged not sufficiently usable, and the region director will investigate alternatives.
An internal review of the Millennium system in Region Skåne, conducted by 150 employees, concluded that the current version is not usable. The assessment covered suitability, efficiency, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and user experience following a checkpoint in January 2026. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the region council's working committee received the results, making it clear that the planned October 2026 rollout will not happen, according to programme manager Harald Roos. “We are pulling the handbrake, investigating alternatives and having a discussion with Oracle,” Roos said. Despite the failure in Västra Götaland Region (VGR) one and a half years ago, where the system was scrapped last autumn, Skåne had proceeded with its plans. Roos stressed that the current system cannot be retained and must be replaced. One option is Oracle's new EHR system, but region director Jonna Myrebris will examine all possibilities. In a press release, Myrebris stated that employees have the right to “in the near term receive information on how we proceed”. Region councillor Henrik Fritzon (S) expressed frustration: “We feel somewhat tricked”. The next meeting on April 21 will present action alternatives and their consequences. Region Skåne has struggled with the system for nearly ten years.
