Ruling party pressure grows for pending political reforms under Kast government

More than seven weeks after the Senate decided not to dispatch the political reform pushed by former minister Álvaro Elizalde, the mixed commission has not yet been formed and the executive has not given it urgency.

The reform aims to strengthen parliamentary committees, raise restrictions on parties and independent candidacies, and has cross-party support from the PC to Republicans. Largely approved by both chambers, the initiative remains pending over details on party declarations of principles.

Deputies and senators from the ruling coalition, such as UDI's Constanza Hube and Evópoli's Luciano Cruz-Coke, have begun coordination to advance a package of changes including party thresholds and requirements for constitutional accusations. Cruz-Coke said these reforms deserve top priority once the Reconstruction Law is passed.

President José Antonio Kast announced on Monday a mandatory drug test in the Constitution. The government's priorities focus on social, economic and security emergencies, with no explicit references to modernizing political institutions.
