Arsenal entered the match aiming for an 11th consecutive win across all competitions and a ninth straight clean sheet, holding a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Sunderland, in fourth place after a 1-1 draw with Everton, started strongly and took the lead in the 35th minute when Dan Ballard, a former Arsenal academy graduate, outmuscled Declan Rice to fire home Nordi Mukiele's knockdown. Mikel Arteta said: "We created a lot of chances ... but very unfortunately at the end we conceded a goal." Dan Ballard added: "You saw again the fight in the team ... we fight to the end." The draw moved Sunderland to third with 19 points from 11 games, one point ahead of Liverpool, while Arsenal's lead narrowed ahead of Manchester City vs Liverpool.
Sunderland restricted Arsenal to two corners and used tactics like moving advertising boards to counter set-pieces. This was Arsenal's first failure to beat a promoted side since May 2023, ending a 14-game streak, and their first time conceding twice in a match this season.
