Trevor Story targets August for rehab assignment

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story plans to begin a minor league rehab assignment sometime in August after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia. He has not played since May 14.

Story said the timeline remains flexible based on how his body responds. “Yeah, we’re still playing it by ear here, but sometime in August is in play for sure,” he said.

The veteran infielder has resumed most baseball activities, with hitting furthest along. He expects to face live pitching soon and identified lateral movements and sprinting as the final tests.

Shortstop duties have rotated among several players during his absence. Marcelo Mayer and Isiah Kiner-Falefa each suffered injuries, leaving Tsung-Che Cheng and Andruw Monasterio to fill the role.

Story expressed pride in the team’s recent turnaround, which includes a 13-game winning streak and an 18-2 run that revived postseason hopes.
