Upme opens call for Nueva Lorica substation

The Mining-Energy Planning Unit (Upme) has launched a public call for the design and construction of the Nueva Lorica Substation, including its associated transmission lines. The project aims to bolster energy services in the departments of Sucre and Córdoba, addressing the rising electricity demand in the municipalities of Lorica, Chinú, and Coveñas.

The Upme, led by director Indira Portocarrero Ospina, has started the process to upgrade energy infrastructure in northern Colombia. The Nueva Lorica substation will add new transmission capacity to strengthen existing networks and minimize supply disruptions.

The entity notes that electricity demand in Lorica, Chinú, and Coveñas has grown steadily in recent years. The project will stabilize voltage for homes, businesses, and institutions, while reducing outages and failures. It will also support economic growth by enabling investments and new generation projects.

Indira Portocarrero Ospina, Upme's director, emphasized the social benefits: "families that have historically suffered from the lack of energy as a fundamental right today. Thanks to President Gustavo Petro's guidelines, we are advancing toward a future with energy justice".

The initiative aligns with the government's efforts to ensure reliable supply and advance the energy transition in the country.
