Widen mental health support for Hong Kong youth beyond high-risk cases, adviser urges

Dr Lam Ching-choi has called for mental health support for Hong Kong youth to be expanded beyond those tagged as high risk.

Dr Lam Ching-choi, a member of Hong Kong’s Executive Council, said high-risk tags do not always identify children in need.

“We have seen worrying cases of children who showed no stressors in their real lives – they came from middle-class families, performed well academically, were not bullied and had good relationships with classmates – yet still took their own lives,” he said.

Lam pointed to social media as a key factor, noting exposure to harmful content and online bullying in the digital world.

He stated that prevention and support measures should cover all young people, adding: “We do not have children who are at zero risk of suicide today.”
