Yoko Taro mourns Sony's end to physical media

NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro has expressed sadness over Sony's decision to discontinue physical media production for its PlayStation consoles. The move, announced three weeks ago, is set to take full effect with the PS6 generation in 2028.

Taro shared his thoughts on X after receiving a physical copy of Hi-Fi Rush. He urged fans to purchase physical editions while they remain available.

"Personally, I can’t help but feel sad about physical media disappearing, but I suppose it’s just the flow of the times," Taro wrote. He had expected Sony to shift physical copies to high-priced collector’s editions rather than eliminate them outright.

The developer noted that physical distribution had been an advantage compared to platforms like Steam. Sony has not commented further since its initial blog post on the change.
