Carmen Domínguez Hidalgo was elected Tuesday in New York with 112 votes as a member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for the 2027-2031 term.
The Chilean lawyer and professor at Universidad Católica secured one of nine renewed seats among 16 candidates. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Social Development and Family confirmed the election before the 196 states parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Chancellor Francisco Pérez Mackenna highlighted Chile's commitment to the rights of children and adolescents. Minister María Jesús Wulf emphasized Domínguez's knowledge in the field.
The Committee, made up of 18 independent experts, oversees the application of the most widely ratified international human rights treaty. Domínguez has 35 years of experience in the public and private sectors.
