Mercedes-Benz 2026 CLA electric sedan starts at $47,250

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the 2026 CLA, an all-electric sedan starting at $47,250, designed to appeal to mainstream buyers with up to 374 miles of range. The vehicle features advanced aerodynamics, AI-integrated software, and efficient charging capabilities. Early drives around San Francisco highlight its balanced performance and interior comforts.

Mercedes-Benz's 2026 CLA marks a shift toward more conventional electric vehicle design, moving away from the unconventional shapes of earlier models like the EQS and EQE. Built on a new modular architecture that supports both electric and future hybrid powertrains, the CLA debuts with a battery-electric version emphasizing efficiency and accessibility.

The base CLA 250+ model employs a single rear-wheel-drive motor producing 268 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. Its 85 kWh battery delivers up to 374 miles of range, aided by a low drag coefficient of 0.21 and wheel sizes from 17 to 19 inches. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, the 350 4MATIC, offers 349 horsepower but reduces range to 312 miles. Charging is swift, with up to 320 kW via NACS port, adding 200 miles in 10 minutes or reaching 10-80% in 22 minutes; a J1772 port handles AC charging.

On the road in the San Francisco Bay Area and foothills of Mt. Tamalpais, the CLA provided precise steering, intuitive pedal response, and comfortable suspension that absorbed urban imperfections, though it felt stiff over potholes. Efficiency reached 3.9 miles per kWh in enthusiastic driving, suggesting real-world potential near 331 miles.

Inside, the CLA uses recycled plastics and materials like paper-based trim, reducing carbon impact by 40%. The optional Superscreen spans up to three displays running MB.OS on NVIDIA hardware, with MBUX infotainment incorporating Google and Microsoft AI for natural language commands. Standard adaptive cruise and lane-keeping assist, plus a driver monitoring system, enhance safety. While the interior feels somewhat cramped, it includes wireless charging and multiple USB-C ports.

Priced competitively below the average new car cost, the CLA aims to broaden EV adoption without sacrificing Mercedes' premium feel.
