Baguio City Council approves higher garbage fees

The Baguio City Council has approved an ordinance raising household garbage collection fees from P20 to P75 per month.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the increase is overdue. The city spends about P200 million a year on waste services that the old fee could no longer support.

The ordinance was approved on third reading on July 13. It sets the new monthly rate at P75 for households, with a 10 percent discount available for full annual payment by April 20.

Businesses face updated fees based on size and type. Barangays will receive half of household collections, rising to 75 percent with full efficiency. Penalties start with a warning and reach P3,000 for repeat offenses.

The measure also adds automatic 10 percent increases every three years beginning in 2027. It requires the mayor’s signature to take effect.
