Chinese think tank proposes path for US-China coexistence amid stalemate

The China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations released a paper on May 22 calling for peaceful coexistence between China and the US despite deepening rivalry. It warns that Washington’s position on Taiwan poses a major risk of conflict.

The paper argues that US-China relations have entered a full-scale strategic stalemate, moving beyond the preliminary phase seen during Donald Trump’s first term.

It highlights a diplomatic formula first raised by Chinese President Xi Jinping in his May 14 talks with Trump, positioning it as the guiding vision for managing the relationship.

The analysis warns that current dynamics present major tests ahead and that the likelihood of conflict is growing.
