Fiba awards Japan hosting rights for 2030 women's basketball World Cup

Basketball governing body Fiba has awarded Japan the hosting rights for the 2030 Women's Basketball World Cup, with France to host the men's tournament in 2031. The women's event will take place in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8.

Fiba announced on Wednesday that Japan will host the 2030 Fiba Women's Basketball World Cup from November 26 to December 8 in Tokyo. France was awarded the 2031 men's tournament, to be held from August 29 to September 14 across Lyon, Lille, and Paris, with the final phase in the capital.

"Japan and France are both elite organizers of global scale events, having hosted the two most recent summer Olympic Games, in 2020 and 2024 respectively," Fiba said. Japan previously hosted the men's World Cup in 2006 and co-hosted in 2023, marking its first time for the women's event. This will be France's first time organizing the tournament.

Japan's women won silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. France's men took silver at the Paris Olympics, with San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama scoring 26 points in the final against the United States. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the decision on X: "A great source of pride for our country. Following the Paris Games, France confirms its ability to organize the greatest international sporting events."

The next women's World Cup will be in Berlin in September, while the 2027 men's edition is set for Qatar.
