LS2 Pioneer II helmet receives strong review from tester

Motorcycle News reviewer Adam Oldfield praises the LS2 MX702 Pioneer II adventure helmet for its comfort, ventilation, and value. Priced at £139.99, the helmet outperforms competitors like the Bell MX-9 Adventure in features. Oldfield, a former skeptic, now recommends it for commuting and touring.

Adam Oldfield, a petrol head mechanic and contributor to Motorcycle News, tested the LS2 MX702 Pioneer II helmet after a colleague suggested it as an alternative to the Bell MX-9 ADV, which he had used previously. Initially skeptical due to his familiarity with the Bell brand, Oldfield found the helmet's fit and finish excellent upon first trying it on.

The Pioneer II, available in a matt Namib colour scheme, features aggressive styling with edges and angles, differing from the smoother lines of rivals. It earns ratings of 4.0 for looks, protection, and comfort and practicality, and 5.0 for value. Key features include channelled EPS ventilation, multiple top vents, a chin vent, and an exhaust port for improved airflow. The hypoallergenic padding is soft and keeps the head cool, while three shell sizes ensure a comfortable fit for all-day wear. The matte finish is durable, and the visor offers a great field of vision with a deep drop-down sun visor. It is fully ECE 22.06 homologated, with an emergency release system, reinforced chin strap, quick release buckle, and scratch- and UV-resistant visor. The helmet is ready for the LS2 intercom LS24x and includes a chin curtain.

At £139.99, the Pioneer II provides better features than the Bell MX-9 Adventure, which costs £139.99 on deal for plain colors and up to £229.99 for specific schemes. The visor's wide aperture resists fogging without a Pinlock insert, and ventilation keeps riders cool in heat or rain. Oldfield notes no pressure points, even for wider heads, making it suitable for extended rides.

In his verdict, Oldfield declares himself an LS2 convert, using the helmet for commutes, travel, and touring. He encourages trying newer brands that meet safety standards, calling the Pioneer II a practical, protective, and stylish option.

The review also mentions the Bell MX-9 Adventure as an honorable mention, praising its ventilation, padding, and quality but noting lacks in top ventilation and sun visor.
