Tre-Kronor-Cheftrainer Sam Hallam bestätigte die Nachnominierung nach direktem Kontakt mit Ekholm im Anschluss an die NHL-Saison. Hallam erklärte, dass Ekholm alle 82 Spiele der regulären Saison bestritten habe und sich fit gefühlt habe, als er gefragt wurde, ob er dem Kader beitreten wolle.
