Samsung Display and Intel develop energy-efficient OLED technology

Samsung Display announced on January 7 that it has developed SmartPower HDR technology with U.S.-based Intel, reducing power consumption in laptop OLED displays by up to 22 percent. The innovation dynamically adjusts voltage according to content characteristics, extending battery life and enhancing the HDR viewing experience. It is expected to significantly boost battery efficiency amid the growing popularity of AI PCs.

Samsung Display, a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, revealed on January 7, 2026, its collaboration with U.S.-based Intel on SmartPower HDR technology. This advancement significantly cuts power consumption in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for laptops, allowing users to activate high dynamic range (HDR) mode while saving up to 22 percent energy compared to previous models. HDR enhances image vividness through brightness optimization, but traditional implementations wasted power by applying fixed high voltages regardless of content.

"Unlike conventional HDR modes that apply a fixed high voltage regardless of the content type causing unnecessary power loss, SmartPower HDR dynamically adjusts voltage based on the characteristics of the displayed content," Samsung Display stated in a release. Specifically, it achieves up to 22 percent savings during general tasks like web browsing and up to 17 percent when playing high-resolution videos or games.

"As artificial intelligence (AI) PCs become more widespread, the new technology is expected to significantly improve battery efficiency and enhance the HDR viewing experience," the company added. This development addresses rising demands for longer battery life in AI-driven computing devices, positioning Samsung Display to strengthen its foothold in the OLED laptop market.
