Es handelt sich um das sechste Schiff der Nilgiri-Klasse (Projekt 17A), das über einheimische Tarnkappenfähigkeiten sowie moderne Bewaffnung verfügt. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai baute das Schiff als viertes der Serie aus dieser Werft. Nach Angaben der indischen Marine markiert die Auslieferung einen wichtigen Meilenstein in Indiens Bestreben nach Eigenständigkeit bei Design und Bau von Kriegsschiffen.
