Youth hockey players stage brawl at Pennsylvania AHL game

A viral video captured young hockey players, aged 8 and under, engaging in a staged fight during intermission at an American Hockey League game in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The incident involved members of the Central Penn Panthers Youth Ice Hockey Club and has drawn promises of disciplinary action from league officials. The Hershey Bears, hosts of the game, condemned the event as contrary to the sport's values.

The altercation occurred on Saturday during the intermission of the Hershey Bears' game against the Cleveland Monsters at the Giant Center in Hershey, about 15 miles east of Harrisburg. Players from the Central Penn Panthers Youth Ice Hockey Club, participating in an 8U "Mites on Ice" event, dropped gloves, threw punches, cross-checked, and hit from behind, with even a goaltender joining the fray. Notably, no adults intervened to stop the action, allowing the staged brawl to unfold.

The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association, which oversees the youth league, issued a statement on Sunday acknowledging the incident. "We are aware of a staged fight that occurred last night at the Hershey Bears (AHL) game involving a Pennsylvania 8U team," the association said. "Affiliate, league and club officials are investigating the matter and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against those players and team officials involved with the staged fight."

The "Mites on Ice" segment is designed to promote fun, with the association describing it as "8.5 minutes of fun on the ice, with players falling, chasing the puck in a pack, and showcasing the best part of our game - having fun."

The Central Penn Panthers also responded, emphasizing participant safety. "The safety, well-being, and positive experience of all participants — especially our young players — are of the utmost importance," the club stated. "We are currently conducting an internal review to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident."

The Hershey Bears, an affiliate of the Washington Capitals, released their own statement later that day. They said the staged brawl "did not reflect the values of the sport" and affirmed they "cannot support or allow conduct that puts participants at risk." The team is collaborating with the involved parties to address the matter. A representative for the Bears could not be reached for further comment on Monday.
