Jordbruksverket urges the public not to move oysters or discard remains in the sea after a parasite was found on the west coast.
The parasite that causes bonamiosis in oysters was discovered in November 2025. The discovery led to restrictions in Bohuslän.
The authority stresses that the parasite is harmless to humans. It is therefore fine to swim, fish and eat oysters as usual.
– We have not seen any increased mortality in the oyster stocks, but that does not mean there is no risk, says Emma Johansson, infectious disease control officer at Jordbruksverket.
It is the first time the parasite has been discovered in Sweden. Jordbruksverket does not plan to eradicate the infection due to high costs.
