Binance launches safety campaign for boda boda riders

Cryptocurrency trading firm Binance has launched the Safety Campaign in Nairobi to encourage boda boda riders to prioritize road safety. The initiative, unveiled on January 28, 2026, during Data Privacy Week, seeks to connect daily safety habits with protecting personal data online. Riders received helmets, uniforms, and road safety training at the event.

Binance's Safety Campaign aims to remind boda boda riders of the importance of protecting themselves on the road, much like safeguarding digital assets. During the launch event in Nairobi, riders were given helmets and official uniforms, along with training on road safety. The initiative simplifies self-protection measures, such as wearing helmets, and draws parallels to online security practices in the digital economy. Speaking at the event, Saruni Maina, Head of Operations for Binance Africa, stated: “Wear a helmet to protect yourself on the road, just as you take security measures when participating in the digital economy.” Calvince Okumu, chairman of the Digital Drivers and Transport Association in Kenya, praised the program for addressing real challenges. “Many of us can't afford proper safety gear. Receiving these helmets is a crucial step and has also opened our eyes to protecting our online income,” Okumu said. The campaign will continue through social media, partnerships with influencers, and educational content, fostering a safe environment for digital currency use across Africa. This comes amid growing road safety concerns, as highlighted by a recent National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) initiative. NTSA has rolled out free eye tests for drivers in Nairobi following a spike in accidents. In the first 20 days of 2026, over 40 people have died on the roads. NTSA explains: “This program is part of our broader road safety strategy. Safe driving starts with the driver's ability to see clearly.” The NTSA effort prioritizes Nairobi due to its high volume of vehicles and accident rates but plans nationwide expansion.
