Ethiopia marked World Environment Day by highlighting its Green Legacy Program which has planted over 48 billion seedlings since 2011.
Initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2011, the program raised forest cover from 11.2 percent to 23.6 percent. This year the plan calls for planting 9.2 billion seedlings of which 40 percent are for forest development and the rest for food and economic uses. The initiative has created jobs for over one million citizens. Ethiopia aims to reach 400,000 electric vehicles by 2030.
