A group of Wiper Party MPs from Kitui County has cautioned President William Ruto against his recent verbal attacks on party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. They urged locals to back Musyoka's 2027 presidential bid amid rising political tensions. The warnings come after Ruto criticized the opposition during an event in Homa Bay.
A section of Wiper Party MPs, mainly from Kitui County and led by Kitui Rural MP Mbooni Mwalika, has warned President William Ruto against attacking and using abusive language towards Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The leaders, speaking at various events in the county, stated that the opposition's primary goal is to oust Ruto from power in 2027.
They called on locals to support Kalonzo's presidential bid in 2027, emphasizing that despite the president's attacks, Kalonzo refrains from responding with insults and instead focuses on his agenda. "Kalonzo does not play that kind of politics. Even if he is attacked, he lays down his agenda for Kenyans. That's what we want," said Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna.
"We've seen recently the president attacking Kalonzo and the opposition in general, telling them they lack sense. We know what we want, and it is to send Ruto home. Right now, taxes have increased, and everyone is complaining," added Mwalika.
The leaders also urged regional figures, including Charity Ngilu and Johnstone Muthama, to back Kalonzo Musyoka as he prepares to challenge President Ruto in the upcoming elections.
However, other MPs from the area aligned with the government have instead encouraged locals to rally behind Ruto's reelection, arguing it is the only path to securing development projects. "Politics is about interests. So if you are interested in development projects, stick to the government so that they are not taken to other places. We must understand that what we have now is very special. Don't be deceived by people who want to undermine the president when they still don't have roads," said Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya.
The statement follows President Ruto's recent attacks on the opposition, seemingly aimed at Kalonzo Musyoka. Ruto has continued to dismiss the opposition's strategy, accusing Kalonzo of achieving nothing for the eastern region despite over 40 years in politics.
At one of his latest engagements in Homa Bay County during the Governor's Cup on December 28, 2025, the President openly criticized the opposition for lacking an agenda while faulting an unnamed leader for being in politics for more than four decades with little to show. Many interpreted Ruto's remarks as a direct jab at Kalonzo.
Meanwhile, the Wiper Party responded to Ruto, accusing him of falsely claiming credit for the Kibwezi-Mutumo-Kitui-Bondoni road project, which the party attributes to Kalonzo.
As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, the emerging political contest between President William Ruto and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is focused on Kalonzo's traditional stronghold in the Ukambani region, with Ruto seeking to gain ground there while Kalonzo aims to hold his support base.
