007 First Light started as ensemble piece at IO Interactive

IO Interactive originally planned 007 First Light as an ensemble story featuring multiple trainee agents rather than focusing solely on James Bond. The approach shifted during development to emphasize Bond as the lone survivor after a key mission.

Michael Vogt, the game's main writer, described the early concept in an interview this week. The story was set to follow several double-O recruits working together through training and missions. This changed when most agents die in an explosion, leaving Bond as the top agent.

Vogt explained that the shift served the narrative by moving from light adventure to harsher reality. The team also adjusted the tone from a straight spy thriller toward more action-adventure with added comedy and charm. Bond matures but remains unjaded by the end.

IO Interactive is now developing story-led DLC set shortly after the main events, returning to locations including Aleph with Lenny Kravitz's character Bawma.

Rasmus Poulsen, art director for IO Interactive's 007: First Light, has clarified that the limited edition DualSense PS5 controller's straight-line design is intentional. The design draws from the game's UI and 'light' themes rather than a traditional gun barrel rifling. Poulsen shared these insights in recent interviews alongside hands-on previews of the game.

Players of 007 First Light have encountered repeated random disconnections from IOI servers during single player sessions. The issue interrupts gameplay with pop up messages even when internet connections remain stable.
