Chennai Metro Rail's tunnelling work between Perambur Barracks and Purasawalkam has been delayed due to challenges in shaft construction and utility relocations. The 1.2 km stretch forms part of the larger phase II project.
The work is part of corridor 3 in the 118.9 km phase II network, which runs underground from Madhavaram to Taramani before becoming elevated. Tunnelling on the upline began in September 2025 and has reached about 65 percent completion.
Officials cited delays in building the retrieval shaft at Purasawalkam junction after shifting utilities including water, sewer and power lines. The tunnel boring machine is operating at a depth of around 18 metres through weathered rock.
An official stated that the machine is expected to reach Purasawalkam in August. Construction of the shaft may require an additional three months, with full completion of this tunnel section scheduled for the end of November.
