La Soldadera, an iconic Mexican gastronomy restaurant, opened its doors in January 1994 during an economic crisis in Ernesto Zedillo's administration. Located steps from the Monument to the Revolution, its name honors the women who participated in the armed conflict that began on November 20, 1910, against Porfirio Díaz. “The name ‘La Soldadera’ refers to the woman who had a great participation in the Mexican Revolution”, explained Mauricio Orozco, a business partner, in an interview with the Cuauhtémoc Mayor's Office. The interior preserves paintings of the 'Adelitas' and period elements, maintaining a concept of homemade Mexican food for 31 years.
The incident occurred just before 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24. An explosion caused by a leak in an LP gas environmental heater started the fire, damaging two tables, a tarp, chairs, and buildup in the extraction hood. Firefighters and emergency services evacuated 50 people inside the restaurant and 150 residents of the building, where the venue occupies the ground floor. The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection controlled the fire with no reports of serious injuries, though one person required hospital care for intoxication.
Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, mayor of Cuauhtémoc, confirmed the situation is under control. La Soldadera's menu features dishes like tongue tacos (355 pesos), arrachera with guacamole, and meat cuts up to 1,490 pesos for a New York. The average check per person is 757 pesos, including soup, appetizer, and main course.
