Maggie Roswell revealed that her character Maude Flanders was written out of The Simpsons following a pay dispute with Fox. The voice actor left the show after Season 10 when negotiations for a raise failed.
Maude Flanders died in Season 11, Episode 14, titled "Alone Again, Natura-Diddly," which aired in 2000. She was struck by T-shirt cannons at a car race after bending over to help her family.
Roswell had been earning $1,500 to $2,000 per episode and requested an increase to $6,000. Fox offered only a $150 bump, leading her to quit. The cast was shocked by the decision to kill the character, according to the actor.
Roswell returned to the series in Season 13 to voice other roles including Helen Lovejoy. She has continued working on the show into its 38th season, now recording from home.
