A fourth-year MTech student at IIT Kharagpur, Soham Haldar, was found hanging in his hostel room on Tuesday. This marks the second such incident on campus in 10 days. Police have launched an investigation.
Soham Haldar, a fourth-year MTech student in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering at IIT Kharagpur and a resident of Barasat in North 24 Parganas, was found hanging in his room at Mohan Malviya Hall on Tuesday morning. His friends noticed the door closed, knocked without response, and alerted security personnel.
He was rushed to the campus's BC Roy Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Hijli police outpost, under Kharagpur Town police station, has begun an investigation and is reviewing CCTV footage of his movements on Monday. A senior police officer stated, "Nothing can be said until the investigation is complete. We have come to know that the student had last spoken to his sister."
IIT Kharagpur issued a statement expressing "a sense of utter shock" and committing full cooperation to authorities. The institute informed Haldar's family immediately and is providing all possible support. It added, "The Institute remains committed to the well-being and mental health of its students and continues to provide access to professional counselling and support services."
This is the second such incident in 10 days, following the death of third-year mechanical engineering student Jaiveer Singh Dodia, who allegedly jumped from the roof of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall on April 18. Several other student deaths occurred on campus in 2025.
