Magnitude 5.3 quake jolts Cagayan; aftershocks expected

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck waters northwest of Dalupiri Island in Cagayan early Thursday morning, according to state seismologists.

The tectonic quake occurred at 6:01 a.m. and was located 32 kilometers northwest of Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan, with a depth of 7 kilometers.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said no damage is expected but aftershocks may occur. Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in parts of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Phivolcs reported Intensity V in Calayan, Intensity IV in Pasuquin, Pagudpud and Burgos in Ilocos Norte, and lower intensities in other nearby areas.

Residents were advised to take precautionary measures due to possible aftershocks.
