Semarnat rejects Royal Caribbean's 'Perfect Day' project in Mahahual

Semarnat secretary Alicia Bárcena announced that the federal government will not approve the 'Perfect Day' water park planned by Royal Caribbean in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The decision follows protests by activists over potential damage to reefs and mangroves.

Bárcena stated on Tuesday, May 19, that “No se va a aprobar el proyecto de ‘Perfect Day’ de Royal Caribbean”. The official noted that the company was already seeking to withdraw, but stressed that Semarnat would reject the environmental permits.

The project included more than 30 slides, an artificial river longer than 1.5 kilometers, six pools, 12 restaurants and 24 bars. Greenpeace activists warned that the work would threaten reefs, mangroves and the habitat of sea turtles and manatees.

Environmental groups also highlighted that a similar project in the Bahamas caused biodiversity destruction. The petition on Change.org, signed by more than 4.5 million people, demanded cancellation to protect the world’s second-largest coral reef.
