Semarnat rechaza el proyecto 'Perfect Day' de Royal Caribbean en Mahahual

La secretaria de Semarnat, Alicia Bárcena, anunció que el gobierno federal no aprobará el parque acuático 'Perfect Day' planeado por Royal Caribbean en Mahahual, Quintana Roo. La decisión sigue a protestas de activistas por los posibles daños a arrecifes y manglares.

Bárcena declaró el martes 19 de mayo que “No se va a aprobar el proyecto de ‘Perfect Day’ de Royal Caribbean”. La funcionaria señaló que la empresa ya buscaba desistirse, pero enfatizó que Semarnat rechazaría los permisos ambientales.

El proyecto contemplaba más de 30 toboganes, un río artificial de más de 1.5 kilómetros, seis piscinas, 12 restaurantes y 24 bares. Activistas de Greenpeace advirtieron que la obra amenazaría arrecifes, manglares y el hábitat de tortugas marinas y manatíes.

Grupos ambientales también destacaron que un proyecto similar en Las Bahamas provocó destrucción de biodiversidad. La petición en Change.org, firmada por más de 4.5 millones de personas, exigía la cancelación para proteger el segundo arrecife de coral más grande del mundo.
