Semarnat rejeita projeto 'Perfect Day' da Royal Caribbean em Mahahual

A secretária da Semarnat, Alicia Bárcena, anunciou que o governo federal não aprovará o parque aquático 'Perfect Day' planejado pela Royal Caribbean em Mahahual, Quintana Roo. A decisão segue protestos de ativistas sobre possíveis danos a recifes e manguezais.

Bárcena declarou na terça-feira, 19 de maio, que “No se va a aprobar el proyecto de ‘Perfect Day’ de Royal Caribbean” (Não será aprovado o projeto ‘Perfect Day’ da Royal Caribbean). A autoridade observou que a empresa já buscava retirar a proposta, mas enfatizou que a Semarnat rejeitaria as licenças ambientais.

O projeto incluía mais de 30 toboáguas, um rio artificial com mais de 1,5 quilômetros de extensão, seis piscinas, 12 restaurantes e 24 bares. Ativistas do Greenpeace alertaram que a obra ameaçaria recifes, manguezais e o habitat de tartarugas marinhas e peixes-boi.

Grupos ambientais também destacaram que um projeto semelhante nas Bahamas causou a destruição da biodiversidade. O abaixo-assinado no Change.org, assinado por mais de 4,5 milhões de pessoas, pedia o cancelamento do empreendimento para proteger o segundo maior recife de coral do mundo.
