La Semarnat rejette le projet « Perfect Day » de Royal Caribbean à Mahahual

La secrétaire à l'Environnement, Alicia Bárcena, a annoncé que le gouvernement fédéral n'approuvera pas le parc aquatique « Perfect Day » prévu par Royal Caribbean à Mahahual, dans l'État de Quintana Roo. Cette décision fait suite aux protestations des militants concernant les dommages potentiels causés aux récifs et aux mangroves.

Mme Bárcena a déclaré mardi 19 mai : « No se va a aprobar el proyecto de ‘Perfect Day’ de Royal Caribbean ». La responsable a précisé que l'entreprise cherchait déjà à retirer son dossier, mais a souligné que la Semarnat rejetterait les permis environnementaux.

Le projet prévoyait plus de 30 toboggans, une rivière artificielle de plus de 1,5 kilomètre de long, six piscines, 12 restaurants et 24 bars. Les militants de Greenpeace ont averti que les travaux menaceraient les récifs, les mangroves ainsi que l'habitat des tortues marines et des lamantins.

Les groupes de défense de l'environnement ont également souligné qu'un projet similaire aux Bahamas avait provoqué une destruction de la biodiversité. La pétition sur Change.org, signée par plus de 4,5 millions de personnes, exigeait l'annulation du projet afin de protéger la deuxième plus grande barrière de corail au monde.
