La Semarnat respinge il progetto "Perfect Day" di Royal Caribbean a Mahahual

La segretaria della Semarnat, Alicia Bárcena, ha annunciato che il governo federale non approverà il parco acquatico "Perfect Day" previsto da Royal Caribbean a Mahahual, nello stato di Quintana Roo. La decisione segue le proteste degli attivisti riguardo ai potenziali danni a barriere coralline e mangrovie.

Bárcena ha dichiarato martedì 19 maggio che “Non verrà approvato il progetto 'Perfect Day' di Royal Caribbean”. Il funzionario ha sottolineato che l'azienda stava già cercando di ritirarsi, ma ha ribadito che la Semarnat avrebbe respinto i permessi ambientali.

Il progetto includeva più di 30 scivoli, un fiume artificiale lungo oltre 1,5 chilometri, sei piscine, 12 ristoranti e 24 bar. Gli attivisti di Greenpeace hanno avvertito che i lavori avrebbero minacciato le barriere coralline, le mangrovie e l'habitat di tartarughe marine e lamantini.

I gruppi ambientalisti hanno inoltre evidenziato che un progetto simile alle Bahamas ha causato la distruzione della biodiversità. La petizione su Change.org, firmata da oltre 4,5 milioni di persone, chiedeva l'annullamento del progetto per proteggere la seconda barriera corallina più grande al mondo.
