MANILA, Philippines — Inihayag ng mga grupo ng transportasyon na Manibela at Piston ang kanilang tatlong-araw na welga simula ngayong April 15 hanggang 17, kasunod ng paglulunsad ng service contracting program. Ayon kay Manibela chairman Mar Valbuena, hindi makakabenepisyo ang karamihan dahil lamang 1,000 operators at 50,000 PUV units ang kasama sa buong bansa. “This program is not beneficial as only a few drivers and operators will be included,” ani Valbuena sa The STAR.

Idinagdag niya na hindi epektibo ang programa dahil sa hindi pa nababayaran na bayarin mula sa administrasyon ni Rodrigo Duterte. “The government will just waste it and transport groups will not benefit,” pahayag niya. Samantala, sinabi ni Piston president Mody Floranda na dapat unahin ng gobyerno ang pagtanggal ng buwis sa gasolina. “If the service contract would last even for 90 days, if fuel prices continue to increase, this is just a band-aid solution,” ani Floranda.

Tumugon naman ang Philippine National Police sa pamumuno ni Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., na nagtalaga ng libreng sakay at 501 pulis mula sa Highway Patrol Group. Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez ay nag-utos sa LTFRB na tukuyin ang mga apektadong ruta, at humiling ng karagdagang P5 bilyong badyet para sa 15 milyong pasahero. Kasabay nito, naglunsad ang DOE ng P10 bawat litro diskwento sa gasolina para sa 171,000 PUV units, na maaaring kunin sa 52 gas station sa Metro Manila gamit ang Landbank app, ayon kay Landbank president Lynette Ortiz at energy chief Sharon Garin.

Makikipag-isa rin sa welga ang mga estudyante mula sa state universities at PARA Commuters’ Network, na umaabot sa hindi bababa sa 500,000 operators at drayber mula Visayas at Mindanao, ayon kay Valbuena.
