L'histoire suit l'architecte Otone et son mari Kensuke après la mort de leur fils de 7 ans, Kakeru, survenue dans un accident deux ans plus tôt. Une entreprise nommée REbirth leur fournit une réplique humanoïde qui ressemble et parle comme l'enfant qu'ils ont perdu. Le film examine si l'enfant artificiel possède une âme, en s'inspirant d'idées issues du Petit Prince et de thèmes selon lesquels les plantes et les arbres auraient une vie intérieure.
