La NASA a transféré 55 montres Speedmaster à un musée en 1976

La NASA a remis 55 de ses chronographes Omega Speedmaster au National Air and Space Museum de Washington, DC, le 27 avril 1976. L'agence avait reçu un total de 100 montres de ce type de la part d'Omega entre 1965 et 1968. Parmi celles-ci, 71 ont été utilisées lors de missions spatiales entre 1965 et 1975.

Les montres portaient des numéros d'identification uniques de la NASA et ont été distribuées aux astronautes pour les missions Gemini et Apollo. Eugene Cernan a porté la montre portant le numéro 28 de la NASA lors de trois vols, notamment Gemini IX-A, Apollo 10 et Apollo 17. La NASA a conservé les montres restantes pour l'entraînement à la navette spatiale jusqu'en 1985, date à laquelle la plupart des exemplaires ayant volé dans l'espace avaient déjà été transférés au musée.
