Un haut dignitaire bouddhiste arrêté au Sri Lanka pour des faits présumés de pédophilie

Les autorités sri-lankaises ont arrêté samedi un haut dignitaire bouddhiste pour des faits présumés d'abus sexuels sur une fillette de 11 ans. La police a déclaré que l'homme de 71 ans a été placé en détention dans un hôpital privé de Colombo. La mère de la victime a également été arrêtée pour complicité.

L'arrestation concerne Pallegama Hemarathana, prêtre en chef d'un temple hautement vénéré à Anuradhapura, à environ 200 kilomètres au nord de la capitale. Les autorités affirment que les abus ont eu lieu sur place en 2022. La cité antique est inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, et Hemarathana officie en tant que gardien d'un arbre issu d'une pousse du Bodhi, lié à l'éveil du Bouddha il y a plus de 2 500 ans.
