Les données publiées mardi par Stats SA montrent que le taux de chômage en Afrique du Sud a augmenté pour atteindre 32,7 % au premier trimestre 2026, soit une hausse de 1,3 point de pourcentage par rapport au trimestre précédent.

Ces chiffres marquent le dernier épisode d'une série de résultats élevés qui se maintiennent au-dessus de 30 % depuis une grande partie de la décennie. Le chômage des jeunes a atteint 60,9 %, tandis que la définition élargie du chômage est montée à 43,7 %.

George Glynos, directeur de la recherche chez ETM Analytics, a décrit cette augmentation comme symptomatique d'une économie qui a perdu son dynamisme. Il a appelé à davantage d'investissements dans les infrastructures et à des réformes visant à réduire l'ingérence du gouvernement dans les affaires.

Mbali Williams, stratège de plaidoyer pour Youth Capital, a affirmé que les exigences pour les emplois de début de carrière sont devenues nettement plus difficiles. Elle a noté que seulement quatre personnes en âge de travailler sur dix participent au marché du travail.

L'économiste Lara Hodes d'Investec a lié ces données à l'incertitude découlant du conflit au Moyen-Orient, qui a fait augmenter les coûts de transport et a incité les entreprises à reporter leurs embauches.
