Chappii and Trump tariffs nominated for Japan's 2025 buzzword award

On November 5, 2025, 30 words and phrases were nominated for Japan's buzzword of the year award. The list includes the Japanese nickname 'Chappii' for ChatGPT, 'Toranpu kanzei' for Trump tariffs, and 'onkaji' for online casinos, along with terms related to the election of the country's first female prime minister.

Japan's annual buzzword award nominations for 2025 were announced on Wednesday, November 5. Publisher Jiyukokuminsha, which hosts the award, revealed a list of 30 words and phrases capturing the year's linguistic trends.

Among the nominees are 'Chappii,' the Japanese nickname for ChatGPT; 'Toranpu kanzei,' referring to Trump tariffs; and 'onkaji,' shorthand for online casinos. Other entries reflect societal issues like the 2025 Osaka Expo, the country's bear problem, rice prices, inflation, extreme weather, and the prime minister selection process.

A standout nomination comes from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comment right after her election as Liberal Democratic Party president last month: she vowed to 'work, work, work, work and work.' The remark drew praise for her determination but also criticism amid ongoing efforts to promote work-life balance. It appears alongside 'josei shushō,' meaning female prime minister.

In a statement, Jiyukokuminsha noted: 'There weren’t many buzzwords in the first half of the year, but after (U.S.) President Donald Trump returned to office, many phrases went viral regarding tariffs.' The publisher added: 'Many words trended later on regarding rice, inflation, extreme weather, selecting the prime minister and other events.'

The award highlights words that gained traction in media and social platforms, offering insight into cultural shifts. The top 10 will be selected in December.
