The notification arrived hours before the game was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET. The company later confirmed it had updated its systems after the error.
The alert was sent at 10:26 a.m. ET on Sunday, July 5. At the time Coinbase's own prediction market page listed the match as weather-delayed. Users shared screenshots on X, prompting CEO Brian Armstrong to say he was looking into the issue with his team.
Max Branzburg, Coinbase's head of consumer and business products, later stated that the incorrect story had been fixed. He added that the firm made updates to avoid similar inaccuracies in the future. Branzburg noted the value of AI-enabled insights while acknowledging the need for further tuning.
The actual match ended with Norway defeating Brazil 2-1 and Haaland scoring twice. The incident occurred as Coinbase expands its prediction markets for U.S. users and adds AI features to its app.
