Deep Space Nine Team Worried Odo Mask Would Limit Acting

The creative team behind Star Trek: Deep Space Nine initially feared that René Auberjonois would struggle to convey emotion while wearing Odo's prosthetics.

Odo, the shapeshifting chief of security on the space station, required an unusual mask design. Producers worried the rubber pieces applied to Auberjonois's head would hide his facial expressions.

Auberjonois reassured the team with his prior experience. He had taught mask acting at Juilliard and used body movements to communicate feelings.

The actor noted in a 1996 interview that a mask could magnify emotions through gestures like a head tilt. The show premiered in syndication on January 3, 1993.

The design later shifted to a single full mask. This change reduced makeup time from three hours to two and allowed greater creative freedom for the character's look.
